How Chiropractic Care Can Alleviate the Effects of Stress on the Body!

One of the things that chiropractic really has to offer is chiropractic helps with the physical manifestations of stress on the body. When someone is stressed out, it alters their body chemistry. They secrete much more adrenaline and cortisol and that can actually slow down the body’s ability to heal.

When someone is under a lot of stress it affects different people differently. When I get stressed out, sometimes I feel tension in my neck and my wife often will get upset stomach. I know other people that get lower back pain associated with stress and when people have lower back pain the muscles will tighten up, they will pull the bones out of alignment. This will actually irritate the nerves more and create more cycles of stress which can build. And this thing can keep snowballing. It becomes a very large problem and then I’ve seen people under stress where their backs totally seizes up.

So, when you go to see a chiropractor, we work with alleviating the alignment situation that’s created by that. When the bones are pulled out of alignment they will irritate the nerves and a chiropractor makes what’s called ‘an adjustment’ to realign the vertebra – get the pressure off the nerve and allow the body to assume a more normal resting tone with less tension in it.

Those are key ingredients to keeping the body healthy when it’s under a lot of stress. But also remember that you want to figure out what is the cause of stress. A patient can go see a chiropractor and get massages day-in and day-out but if you don’t get to the ultimate cause of the stress, then the problem is not just going to go away. Sometimes that might not be handled in my office. I basically joke around with my patients that I can handle everything from the neck down but anything above the neck, that’s not my realm. Maybe they need to speak to a therapist or speak to some type of counselor and those people are very important in dealing with the stress of life and they have an education in an area of expertise that goes beyond what I do. But that being said, chiropractic is great for relieving the physical manifestations of stress that people come up with.

The other thing that it does is, it helps your body cleanse itself and burn out those chemicals, the cortisol and the adrenaline, that are constantly coursing through the body. So it will really help with the physical manifestations and all the effects of stress on the body. When the spine is more resilient, the body and nerve system just work better and that’s the key. Remember that chiropractic is a holistic practice not just dealing with these specific problems of back pain and neck pain but really dealing with the whole body and whole person. That’s what makes chiropractic unique in dealing with stress and the stressed out individual.
