Genetics vs. Lifestyle: How Chiropractic Care Helps You Adapt and Stay Healthy

A lot of people throw out things that they think are genetic. Some people think that cancer is genetic, some people think heart disease is genetic, diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis. Many times people say, “It runs in my family, and therefore it’s got to be genetic.” And we’ve cited this many times before, that according to the MacArthur Foundation, most of these things are 30% genetic and 70% lifestyle.

Chiropractic can help people with their lifestyle. If there truly is a genetic predisposition, well, if you have it, you have it. There’s a 30% chance that it’s going to affect your life, and a 70% chance that if we change our lifestyle or modify and lead a healthy lifestyle, well, maybe we can rewrite our family tree and change the genetic, or at least the outcome, or mitigate the severity of the disease.

Now, chiropractic works very simply, and we don’t truly try to manage conditions. Chiropractic is holistic and it goes on the premise that the nervous system is the master system, and your nervous system controls, coordinates and helps your body to adapt to stress. The only time the body starts to break down is when there’s an inability of the body to adapt to stress.

Your body’s nervous system is designed to help your body adapt, that’s truly what it does. If it’s hot out, my nervous system realizes it’s hot and opens up my sweat pores. That’s an actual adaptation to help my body survive. If I need to run for the bus, well, my heart needs to beat faster. I can’t sit here right now and make my heart beat faster, but as soon as I start to run for the bus, the innate intelligence, that wisdom that runs my body, starts my heart beating faster because it knows I need more oxygen. So, by enhancing nervous system function, those processes, those adaptations, go more smoothly and more efficiently. That’s what helps the body stay healthy and helps mitigate the severity of these “genetic” diseases.

So just because you’ve been told you have a genetic condition, it doesn’t mean that you have to suffer that fate for the rest of your life. There are things you can do to mitigate them. Chiropractic is holistic and we say it has a very narrow scope of practice by adjusting the spine, but since the nervous system controls everything, it has such a broad application in the body and can really assist the body in managing many conditions through proper neurologic function. Chiropractic helps by enhancing neurologic function and making sure the body is optimized.
