3 Things Women Should Know About the Webster Technique

Three things women should know about the Webster Technique are it is safe, effective and absolutely painless.

Sometimes, when a mom comes in and she’s already in pain or having some discomfort because of the weight gain and the center of gravity shifting to the anterior, it can put a lot of stress on the lumbar spine. The Webster Technique is really great at relaxing some of the structures, the ligaments and the tendons and the muscles, and realigning the vertebrae to actually make pregnancy relatively comfortable. And I’m not going to lie, we get a certain handful of moms that are just very uncomfortable no matter what we do. But a lot of moms report significant relief from the pain and discomfort associated with pregnancy and carrying an extra 20 or 30 pounds.

The Webster Technique is extremely safe. It doesn’t affect the baby. Most moms are really happy because we have these cool tables with the whole abdominal piece that drops out. So, they get to lay face down. Usually, once they get laying on those tables, they want to buy them from me so they can sleep on them. But obviously, they’re not for sale.

The most important thing that I want people to know about the Webster Technique is when it’s applied correctly, we get just about an 80 to 85% success rate with shorter delivery times, less pain, and most importantly, less need for intervention particularly the Pitocin, epidurals, and C-sections. And really, a lot of moms coming to us are just looking to have a more safe, and more natural birth. Some of them are looking to do their birthing at home, but they just want the knowledge and the confidence to know that they did everything they could to make sure that this birth is going to go as smooth as possible.

So again, the top three things about the Webster Technique are it’s safe for the mom and the baby, it’s very effective, and there’s no pain or discomfort. Again, it almost always results in shorter delivery times, less pain, and less need for interventions, like the Pitocin, epidural, and C-sections, which a lot of moms go through. A lot of times, you can actually prevent the need for those things by planning for a proper birth and working with a birth doula or a midwife.

The Webster Technique is really just a wonderful technique that is safe, gentle, and effective. We are honored to bring this technique to New York City.
