I often get asked how a chiropractor can help a pregnant woman experiencing in-utero constraint because we focus on that and we deal with a lot of expecting moms through our work through the ICPA, which is the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. They define the Webster technique as “Specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the neuro system, and facilitates biomechanical balance in the pelvic structures, muscles and ligaments.” This has been shown through research to reduce inter-uterine constraint, allowing the baby to get into the best possible position for birthing. At no time should this technique be interpreted as a breach turning technique.
What’s important to understand is that chiropractors can help get pressure off the nerves, which contribute to the function of the uterus. And also by realigning the attached ligaments that run from the pelvis to the sacrum, and from the pelvis to the pelvic brim, and the uterus, these connections, when they’re out of balance, can cause the uterus itself, to be misshapen. Through a series of gentle adjustments, and working with some of the soft tissues, the ligaments, and using some relaxation techniques, we’re able to realign the pelvis, and create the optimal environment for the developing baby. Which allows it to move freely, and turn into the vertex down position when they’re ready for birthing.
With this optimized space, the baby gets the best chance of getting to the best possible position, and optimal fetal positioning leads to a safer, and easier birth. This helps the moms in a lot of ways, not to mention that fact that while they’re pregnant, they can have an awful lot of lower back pain, sacral pain, and discomfort in the pelvic area, and realigning the pelvic structures can often reduce the amount of discomfort they’re having. Which in turn, makes for a better, less stressful pregnancy.
So there are a lot of different ways that moms can be helped with the Webster technique, and throughout the time of the pregnancy with chiropractic. The best part about it is there’s no drugs, and no surgery, nothing that’s going to negatively impact the baby. There’s minimal side effects, if at all. Most moms experience less pain and feel better. Not that there’s never any discomfort associated with the techniques. Most moms, while having the techniques done, might feel a little bit of pressure in certain areas, but it’s really minimally discomforting to them, and really allows for best pelvic alignment, and it’s one of the safest ways to go about treating the expecting mom.
