How often someone should visit the chiropractor all depends on the chronicity of the problem, meaning how long they’ve had the problem, and the severity of the problem. It also depends on the patient’s current health status, if they have comorbidities, if they are diabetic, or if they are overweight? Are they someone who exercises? These are important factors, right?
And then, how severe is the pain? Was it from a major car accident or was it from a birth trauma or a bicycle accident, or a car verse pedestrian? The amount of forces that are involved in these accidents will dictate how much care they’re going to need.
When we consider the patient’s health status, we have to factor in whether they’re de-conditioned, or if they are overweight? Are they under stress? Have they had significant traumas before? What’s the age of the patient? Are their bones brittle? Are they osteoporotic? Have they had chiropractic care before?
All those factors are really determined and figured out by taking a careful history. We’re going to listen to what you have to say, what your history was, and what you think your problems are. We do a detailed consultation and a complete chiropractic, orthopedic and neurological evaluation of the nerve system to determine how healthy the spine is. How well is it lined up? Is the spine misaligned and irritating those delicate spinal nerves that exit from in between those bones? When you irritate those nerves, those problems really start to add up.
There are multiple factors that determine how much care is needed initially, and very often in their care plan, we make those determinations based on x-rays. But all the roads lead to Rome. And once your initial correction is done, typically somewhere between 2-4 times a month is enough to keep the spine and nerve system healthy and subluxation free. When your body is subluxation free or you have the best alignment, there’s the least amount of irritation. Your nerve system works at ease, and it coordinates all the actions that your body has to do from repairing itself, running and regulating and healing.
So, if you have a spine and a nerve system, you need a chiropractor. Just like if you have teeth, you need a dentist. We experience our entire lives through our nerve system. It’s how you interface with the world. The nerve system’s efficiency and ability to adapt to stress, strains, accidents and falls will determine how resilient your body is and how quickly it will start to repair itself, heal, and get you back to using an active, healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
The goal of a patient coming into our office is to get rid of those subluxations and put the nerve system in a state of what we call clear, meaning there’s no interference. We have methods of checking the spine and nerve system in our office. We use thermography pre and post checks to see if they are clear. A clear nerve system is a nerve system that’s efficient, has no interference and is running like it’s running on a DSL or a T1 line. Not that crappy dial-up that I always refer to. As long as we have no interference in the nerve system and we have free flow communication from the brain to the body, our body is going to be as healthy as it can be. Your body is super intelligent, and it’ll run, regulate and do everything through its nerve system without us even thinking about it.
When a patient comes in, we will do an initial assessment. There is an initial corrective period, which can be anywhere from 6 weeks to 3-6 months, depending on the health of the spine and how much care they have had in the past. Once we get them to a healthy state, periodic checkups usually about twice per month will keep that body in a clear state. A clear spine and a clear healthy nerve system is a healthy body.
