Receiving chiropractic care early in life can help prevent health problems later in life. The number one health problem that can be prevented is primarily related to posture. You can prevent scoliosis from progressing to a more significant level. Scoliosis refers to lateral curves that develop in a child’s spine. If children are checked and these issues are caught early before they complete all phases of growth, while the growth plates are still open, you can have a much more profound effect. Preventing and managing scoliosis is something that is very important to have your kids checked for.
In addition to lateral curves, there are anterior-to-posterior curves, which include the curve in your neck and the curve in your lower lumbar spine. These should form a C-curve, while the thoracic curve should go in the opposite direction.
Those three curves, in the sagittal dimension, act like a shock-absorbing spring. If they develop properly, the spine is much better at absorbing shock and becomes more resilient and resistant to stress. Jumping, playing, falling, and other impacts cause those three curves to compress like a shock-absorbing spring, which mitigates the amount of force placed on the body. This also helps prevent misalignment.
When things get out of alignment, neural structures can become irritated, and that’s where the real problem begins. When information traveling from the brain to the cells, tissues, and organs is disrupted, communication is interfered with, allowing the body to go down the wrong pathways and become dysregulated. For example, if those nerves go to the adrenal glands, you may oversecrete adrenaline, causing muscles to remain tight and taut all the time.
The second issue, aside from postural concerns, is immune system compromise, which can also be prevented. The body runs and regulates the immune system through the nervous system. If there is static or interference in this control mechanism, for example, in the nervous system, immune system connection, and it is not operating optimally and efficiently, the body is more likely to get sick or stay sick longer. When the immune system is not working efficiently, recovery takes more time because the nervous system must direct and control immune function.
Chiropractic, however, isn’t truly designed just to prevent problems or correct issues. It is designed to help keep the body functioning at its optimum potential. We all have a potential we can live up to, and as long as the nervous system properly regulates the body at its optimal level, we are able to express optimal health.
When interference is removed from a child’s nervous system, cognitive abilities can improve, stress levels decrease, and overall health is enhanced. This can also help prevent injuries, as discussed earlier. When the spine is properly aligned, it is more resilient, core strength improves, and the body is better able to adapt to the stresses of life and ward off injury and the long-term effects of stress.
