Chiropractic care needs to be better understood because if you ask 9 out of 10 people on the street what a chiropractor is, most of them are going to tell you that, “I’m a back doctor.” Really what I want to share with people is that as a chiropractor, I’m really working with the nerve system. I’m using the spine as my avenue of approach, but since the spinal bones are designed to protect your central nervous system, in particular, the spinal cord, which runs down the center of the spinal column and then exiting from in between the joints are these delicate spinal nerves. Now if we think about that anatomy and where all those nerves go, those nerves go everywhere. They go to every cell, tissue and organ system in your body.
So, in order to have good health, your nerve system needs to run and regulate and control what your body does. As a chiropractor, the primary thing that I’m looking at when I do an examination is the alignment of those spinal bones.
Typically, stress, tension, poor posture, accidents, falls can create misalignments or what we call subluxations. When the vertebrae or the bones subluxate, they misalign and then they pinch and irritate the nerves. When the nerves are irritated, that stops the conveyance of the nerve impulses or the messages or distorts them. So then the message going from your brain to the stomach to secrete more stomach acid to digest the protein you just ate, if it doesn’t get there in time or it’s distorted and you don’t make enough stomach acid, then you may have problems digesting that food. So, it can not only cause back pain or neck pain because when you think about it, the nerves do a lot more than just sensing pain and moving muscle.
Nerves actually control, run and regulate every little thing that our body does, including our body’s healing. That’s what makes chiropractic so important and how it can affect the body in many different ways. Of course, people are going to get better from back aches, neck aches, and those things. That’s simple. That’s the low-lying fruit. It will improve flexibility and joint mobility. It can also prevent problems if we have infants and children getting checked periodically from every fall, bump and bruise and get them checked once in a while rather than letting these things build up and accumulate and create bigger misalignment problems later. If you just clear out small problems and get the pressure off the nerves again, those kids have the best chance to heal, run and regulate their body, and enjoy good health.
The healthier the nervous system, the healthier the spine, the healthier the body, and that’s what makes chiropractic so important because the nerve system is so far reaching in the body. It is the master system. It controls every other one. So, if you have bones out of place, pinching and irritating the nerves, it’s going to change the way your body runs and regulates. By clearing out that pressure, your body is going to run and regulate better, and that’s what’s going to keep you healthy. Our bodies were designed to be healthy. They’re not designed to be sick. The way we were created is for that nervous system to run, regulate, and even heal the body when it has stresses.
So, in a nutshell, that’s what chiropractic is. It’s extremely important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. But remember, it’s not the only piece. Chiropractic is not a panacea. It’s not going to cure everything that ails anybody, but it certainly stacks the deck in your favor and helps you maintain a healthier spine and a much healthier nerve system, which equals a healthy body.
